NSW: One hospitalised, hundreds evacuated after CBD fire

SYDNEY, Aug 26 AAP - A 30-year-old man suffered facial burns and hundreds of workerswere evacuated when a fire broke out in a high-rise block in Sydney's CBD today.

NSW Fire Brigade spokesman Ian Krimmer said the fire broke out an electrical substationin the Sussex Street building's basement about 8.30am (AEST).

"One worker was injured and taken to hospital and several hundred workers were evacuatedfrom shops on the lower level of the complex," he said.

"Five people trapped in a lift have been rescued and released without injury."

An ambulance spokesman said a man suffering burns had been taken to nearby St Vincentshospital for treatment.

"We have taken a 30-year-old male with facial burns to St Vincents," he said.

Traffic was thrown into chaos during the morning peak as the fire caused Sussex Streetto be blocked at Bathurst Street, he said.

Mr Krimmer said 20 firefighters from five stations had flooded the basement of thebuilding with carbon dioxide in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

"We also have power outages in the area," he said.
